Building the Foundation for Utility Communications Excellence
Industry experience and collaborative innovation driving reliable solutions
-
Our Mission
To leverage our deep expertise in communications technologies to assist regional telecoms and utilities in North America with a particular focus on developing shared platforms and implementing best practices.
-
Our Vision
Our vision is to support the utility industry to transform their communications networks and improve service and reliability through advisory services and shared communications infrastructure.
Our Journey
Heddian was founded with a clear purpose: to provide specialized communications technology solutions to the utility industry. In our founding year, we secured our first client partnership with NRTC, supporting rural electric cooperatives with smart grid communications infrastructure. This early success established our foundation as trusted advisors in the utility communications space and set us on the path to developing the shared platforms and best practices that define our work today.
History of the Heddian Name
The foundation of modern radio communications is a technique called frequency hopping. Few know that the approach was invented in the 40’s by Hedy Lamarr who is largely known as a glamorous Hollywood actress.
Despite her fame, Lamarr's intellectual pursuits were deeply rooted in her childhood. Her father, a bank director, often explained the mechanics of various technologies during their walks, sparking her interest in how things worked. This foundation of curiosity and problem-solving would later play a pivotal role in her groundbreaking invention.
During World War II, Lamarr became concerned about the vulnerability of Allied radio communications, particularly in guiding torpedoes. She collaborated with composer George Antheil, and together they devised a system called "frequency hopping." This innovation involved rapidly switching radio frequencies to prevent enemy interception or jamming. Inspired by Antheil's knowledge of player-piano mechanisms, they used a similar concept to synchronize the frequency changes between the transmitter and receiver. In 1942, they were granted a patent for their invention, though it was not immediately adopted by the military.
Lamarr's invention laid the groundwork for modern communication technologies, including cell phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Despite her significant contribution, she received little recognition during her lifetime because her patent was classified during the war effort. It wasn't until decades later that her role as a pioneer in secure communications was acknowledged, earning her posthumous accolades and a place in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Lamarr's journey from Hollywood starlet to innovative inventor is a testament to her multifaceted brilliance and determination.
The name Heddian pays homage to Hedy in our desire to provide foundational communications technology for our nation’s utilities. Our core values take inspiration from her with our customer obsession fueled by commitment to operational excellence and innovation brought together by an outstanding team.
